Peschiera del Garda

Peschiera Hotels

Located at the southern tip of Lake Garda, Peschiera del Garda is a former garrison town surrounded by 16th century walls. Bordered by the lake and the Mincio River, it’s been a natural tourism and trade centre since Renaissance times. One of the quieter cities on the lake, Peschiera is a great place to have a low key visit to Lake Garda with breathtaking views.

The story of Peschiera could be called “a tale of two cities.” The walls divide the area between the old town centre and the newer developments. The massive walls and barracks divide the two, giving each portion of the city its own distinctive flavour.

Peschiera History

In 1516, the city became part of the city-state of Venice and gained its walls. The old centre is completely surrounded by water, giving Peschiera some of the most fabulous views of Lake Garda from anywhere along the coast. Within the walls, narrow streets criss-cross between residences, shops and restaurants. Here you get a feel for what it must have been like to live in this picturesque port town during the Renaissance. The remaining castle has been converted into a restaurant, and there are also many other choices for dining in the old town. Outside the walls, the newer development has a nice Marina. It also features a floating restaurant which you need to experience!

Stay in Peschiera

The port is one of the biggest on the lake, and there are ferries to most of the other cities. There are over 45 hotels for you to choose from, as well as over 6,000 camping spaces, which make it an ideal location to stay during your visit. Unlike more frequented cities, when you stay in Peschiera you get a real feel for Italian lakeside life. If you don’t mind travelling a bit to see the major sites, this city is perfect for your stay.

This isn’t to say that Peschiera doesn’t have its own unique destinations. As already mentioned, the lake views from this city are absolutely spectacular. Since the old town area is surrounded by both the lake and the river, the views from the walls are incredible. The many marinas produce a wide variety of sailboats, yachts and other vessels to watch from your perch above the water.

Peschiera Attractions

Another notable feature of Peschiera is the Lakeside walk. This is another way to take in the view of the lake. It’s a nice place to stroll in the early evening to see the sunset. If you’re into sports, there’s soccer, tennis, skating and “tamburello” nearby as well as three different riding stables.

If you’re interested in architecture Peschiera has a lot to offer. The St. Martino Church was built in the 11th century and features five different altars. The historic Palace is another great place to visit. It houses relics from World War I and the military history of the area.

Peschiera may be overshadowed by the more crowded resort towns of Lake Garda, however you shouldn’t discount it. The beautiful lakeside views, the shop-lined streets and the marinas are something not to be missed!
